Privacy policy
Last updated: June 29, 2026
This privacy policy describes how SPICE handles information. SPICE is developed and maintained by Pieter Kanters. For questions about privacy, you can contact us via spice.stoqi.app or via Settings → Contact in the app.
1. What SPICE does
SPICE (Scanned Products I Can Eat) is an app for scanning your personal allergies. You configure your allergies and intolerances, scan product barcodes, and the app tells you whether a product is safe to eat. All allergen settings and scan history are stored locally on your device and are never uploaded to a server.
2. Data we collect and why
2.1 Data stored locally on your device
The following data is stored exclusively on your device in a local database and is never transmitted:
Allergen and intolerance preferences that you select during installation or in the settings
Scanned product history (barcode, product name, ingredient list, allergen rating, scan date)
App settings (language, selected allergens)
This data never leaves your device.
2.2 Search by barcode
When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to external services to retrieve product information:
Open Food Facts (world.openfoodfacts.org) — Privacy: https://world.openfoodfacts.org/privacy
UPCItemDB (upcitemdb.com) — Privacy: https://www.upcitemdb.com/privacy
Only the barcode number is sent; no personal data or allergen preferences are sent to these services.
2.3 Ingredients list (photo and translation)
When you photograph an ingredient list, text recognition takes place entirely on your device using Google ML Kit. No image or photo is sent to an external server.
The recognized ingredient list can then be translated into your preferred language via:
MyMemory (translated.net) — Privacy: https://mymemory.translated.net/doc/privacy.php
Only the ingredient list is sent; no personal data is transmitted.
3. Device permissions
SPICE can request the following authorizations:
| Authorization | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Camera | Scan product barcodes and photograph ingredient lists |
| Photo library / Media access | Add product photos from your gallery |
4. Sharing data
SPICE does not sell, trade, or rent your personal data to third parties.
Data is only shared with:
MyMemory (only the ingredient list, for translation)
Open Food Facts and UPCItemDB (only the barcode number, for looking up products)
5. Data security
- Your allergen preferences and scan history are stored locally on your device in an SQLite database, protected by your device’s security measures.
- Contact form data, barcode lookups, and ingredient translations are transmitted via encrypted HTTPS connections.
- Your allergen profile or scan history is not stored on external servers.
- Photos taken within the app are processed entirely on your device and are never uploaded.
6. Save and delete data
Local app data: Stored on your device until you uninstall or manually delete the app. Uninstalling the app will permanently delete all local data, including your allergen settings and scan history.
7. Privacy for children
SPICE is not intended for children under the age of 13. Personal data of children provided via the contact form will be deleted immediately upon notification.
8. Your rights
Depending on your country of residence, you may have the right to:
View which personal data we hold about you
Have your data corrected or deleted
Object to or restrict the processing of your data
File a complaint with a data protection authority
Since all personal data is stored locally on your device, you can view and delete it directly by managing or uninstalling the app. For information via the contact form or further questions, you can contact the developer via spice.stoqi.app or via Settings → Contact in the app.
9. Changes to this policy
Policy changes may occur. The date at the top indicates the most recent revision. By continuing to use the app after changes, you accept the changes.
